Men and Relationships

27 Jan 2009 In:

I came across this article in the Ladies Home Journal and I thought I should share it here with other women who also sometimes wonder what men want in a relationship. Well…here it is:

- Men want to be married. In a recent Gallup poll, more teenage boys than girls said they planned to get married in the future, and seven out of 10 adult males have already walked down the aisle. They also want kids. More than 90% of guys say they plan to have children one day.

- They’re not in a hurry. The typical groom these days is age 27, compared with 23 in 1960. David Popenoe, the co-director of the National Marriage Project, says that many men have parents who’ve split up, so they’re waiting longer to make sure they don’t make a mistake.

- Pretty face is not the most important. Robert Glover wrote No More Mr. Nice Guy. He says what your man really wants is for you to think he’s attractive.

- Successful wife. In one study, nearly all the men said they wouldn’t be threatened if their spouse made more money. They’d be proud.

- The most important thing guys are looking for is a soul mate. According to the National Marriage Project, some 94% of men say they want to marry someone they connect with emotionally.

If you watched 2009 SAG Awards last weekend you’ve probably noticed comeback of bright and beautiful colors to the red carpet.

Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie chose stunning blue dresses accessorized with sparkling jewelry. Rachel Evan Wood channeled old-school Hollywood glamour with tumbling curls and a teal asymmetric Monique Lhuillier dress. Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto wowed in a flowing Marchesa cornflower Grecian gown. Christina Applegate was glowing in jade green Ungaro, and Claire Danes radiant in scarlet red Nina Ricci. She finished off her look with Fred Leighton jewels and Jimmy Choo’s “Elazer” platform sandals. Jane Krakowski accepted her award for outstanding performance in gorgeous red dress with a deep neckline.

There has been much talk lately about Michelle Obama’s style and almost all magazines and tabloids published articles commenting on her wardrobe and look.

But let’s not forget about the jewelry, an important element of Mrs Obama’s look. For the historic event of inauguration of her husband Barack Obama as the nation's 44th president, the First Lady wore diamond-stud earrings and a Victorian paste pin, once meant as a sash decoration. For the inaugural balls on Tuesday night jewelry was a very important part of her outfit and she accessorized her full-length ivory gown by designer Jason Wu with classic diamonds. She chose Loree Rodkin diamond linear earrings, diamond ring and diamond bangle bracelets.

Sally Morrison, the director of Diamond Information Center said: "By choosing to wear a pair of classic diamond linear earrings and diamond bangle bracelets, Michelle Obama has defined her own take on a timeless and enduring diamond look in a way that is destined to become iconic in fashion history (…) This look is absolutely her own, simultaneously modern in a way that will be emulated by women around the world today, but so timeless that it may very well one day be worn by her own daughters."

If you are an admirer of amber (like we are) and visiting Germany this year, you have to stop at the Castle Museum in Ghota which opened “Gold of the North – a recovery of an amber cabinet” exhibition. The exhibition features the history of recovered XVIIth century amber cabinet decorated with ivory reliefs. The unusual amber cabinet has been acquired from private collectors with great help of art historians from Munich and Georg Laue, an antiquarian.

The cabinet was severely damaged – as a result of a fall it had broken down into 100 pieces, which were put together with great difficulty. Also the damages resulting from previous unsuccessful attempts of restoration had to be repaired. The purchase price of the object was 20 000 Euro, whereas the costs of essential restoration in a workshop of Annina Seele, a restorer from Heidelberg, specializing in amber, cost almost 19 000 Euro. The amber cabinet belonged to Friedenstein Kunstkammer in XVIIth century and then changed owners throughout ages and finally got severely damage during war.

Although the exhibition is focused on the cabinet it also features other amber objects worth seeing. The collection includes: jewelry case, writing kit, family altar, board game, chessboard and a clock. All objects are made of amber, ivory and silver.

Famous Jewelry Exhibition

Visitors of The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County now have a chance to see one of the most famous diamonds in the world - the “Kazanjian Red”. The diamond is one of only three vividly blood-hued red diamonds known to exist. The 5-carat stone was found around 1927 in the diamond fields of South Africa, the red diamond was a sensational discovery. During World War II, it was stolen in Arnhem during Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, and hidden in a salt mine with other looted treasures. When it was recovered by American soldiers, it was at first mistaken for a ruby. The diamond’s original owners did not survive the war and the gem was eventually sold. It passed through several hands, including those of Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, until it was purchased by a private collector in 1970. There it remained hidden until 2007 when it was purchased by Los Angeles-based Kazanjian Bros. Inc.

Also on loan from the Kazanjian Foundation the museum displays a sparkling "Hollywood Jewels Collection," which features an emerald and diamond brooch once owned by Faye Dunaway; a bejeweled compact given to Carole Lombard by Clark Gable; the Edwardian era (ca. 1910) tiara worn by Madonna in her wedding to Guy Ritchie, and a gold and diamond collar necklace given to actress Terry Moore by Cary Grant, who once said that Grant gave her the gift in appreciation for letting him cry on her shoulder during his divorce.

Through the display and sale of private jewelry collections, the company’s Kazanjian Foundation raises funds for scholarship programs for underprivileged youths.

Last weekend at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles stars and celebrities attended The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Everybody looked beautiful and glamorous. Designer gowns mostly in black, white, navy and purple colors accessorized with sparkling jewelry brought a bit of old Hollywood glamour to the Golden Globe Awards.

Top jewelry trends of the evening included earrings in drop styles and studs, statement necklaces and bold bangles and cuffs. Beyonce Knowles and Eva Mendes were the winners of best dressed. They both wore strapless gowns and beautiful fringe necklaces. Eva Mendes chose vintage turquoise and diamond necklace by Van Cleef and Arples that added color to her all-white Christian Dior gown. Beyonce accessorized her Elie Saab gown with diamond necklace and earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Christina Applegate chose yellow-diamond drop earrings, flower necklace and rings, and Elizabeth Banks cushion-cut diamond studs, necklace and flower rings, all by Lorraine Schwartz. Marisa Tomei decorated her neck with Sevan's one-of-a-kind "Zeus" necklace in carved citrine and diamonds along with several other platinum necklaces featuring darkened and pave diamond balls by Neil Lane. Drew Barrymore donned moonstone and opal pendant earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, Kate Beckinsale chose red spinel and diamond chandelier earrings, Sandra Bullock wore yellow gold and turquoise earrings by Amrapali and yellow gold and turquoise snake bracelets by Bochic, and Megan Fox wore yellow gold and emerald earrings, yellow gold and diamond bangles and beaded emerald bangles by Amrapali.
