"Natural" Jewelry

26 Feb 2009 In: Fashion & Jewelry

Yanaya Spring’s jewelry is an interesting collection for this spring. Yanaya comes from Ukraine and designs jewelry made from natural flowers and leaves.

To create the pieces, she chemically cleans off the floral layers until the thin vegetable veins, or skeleton, are exposed. She then returns them to their fleshy forms by using a special plastic. That’s why all the jewelry shines and has a solid foundation.

Her plant jewelry collection features orchids, grapes, maple, ivy, cherries, and even the Egyptian rose.

Michelle Obama's Style

While attention of paparazzi and media was focused on celebrities arriving at Oscars Ceremony last weekend, the most important couple of the country President Obama and his first lady Michelle Obama were attending the National Governors Association dinner – their first black tie dinner.

Michelle Obama stole the spotlight at a political dinner wearing a deep purple / ink blue sequin, strapless gown by Peter Soronen paired with a dramatic multi-strand necklace of pearls and crystals by Tom Binns. The dress is the “twilight gown” from Peter Soronen’s Fall Winter 2008 collection. As is Soronen’s signature, the top part of dress is a corset, with a long bias skirt, all in sequins. Michelle Obama also chose a stunning upswept hair do with gorgeous simple earrings.

Oscars 2009 Jewelry

Glamour and elegance swept the red carpet during Oscar night ceremony last Sunday. Movie stars presented fabulous outfits from famous designers and the latest jewelry trends. The evening was dominated by classic diamond jewelry and the most popular seemed to be diamond stud or drop earrings paired with a diamond ring and diamond bracelets at the wrist.

Kate Winslet, accepted her Oscar for Best Actress wearing Chopard bracelet featuring 117 carats of multi-cut diamonds, which she paired with pear-shaped diamond cluster earrings in platinum and a diamond ring. Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway complemented her Armani Prive gown with Cartier diamond watch bracelet from the company's private archive collection, a double- and triple-row diamond bracelet, diamond and white gold earrings, a diamond pave ring and a diamond brooch worn in her hair. Penelope Cruz, the Best Supporting Actress winner chose Chopard platinum necklace featuring 69 carats of cushion-cut diamonds, paired with diamond bracelets, stud earrings, rings and a diamond arrow pin in her hair. Her contender Taraji P. Henson was the talk of the evening in terms of jewelry looks. Henson presented 19th-century vintage diamond-flower necklace from Fred Leighton. She paired it with diamond pendant earrings featuring 6-carat cushion-cut drops. Actresses Evan Rachel Wood and Diane Lane channeled vintage looks through darkened diamond and platinum pieces from Neil Lane, with Wood choosing chandelier earrings, a bracelet and ring, and Lane choosing fringe necklace, plus earrings and rings.

Although diamond jewelry was definitely the most popular that evening a few actresses decided to add some color to their wardrobe. Melissa Leo chose Fred Leighton platinum and green drop earrings, Angelina Jolie presented green emerald drops from Lorraine Schwartz and Marisa Tomei sparkled in Van Cleef and Arpels lapis lazuli and yellow gold earrings and Van Cleef's signature "Ludo" diamond and sapphire bracelet set in 18-karat white and yellow gold. Amy Adams followed Henson’s style wearing bold Fred Leighton statement-necklace featuring green, red and blue stones. One of the most colorful was the presenter Natalie Portman who accessorized her beautiful pink Rodarte dress with Kwiat diamond drops, a vintage diamond cluster ring and diamond hair pins and combs.

Oscars 2009 Fashion

23 Feb 2009 In: Fashion & Jewelry

Yesterday, like every year during Oscars, the red carpet at the Kodak Theater was crowded with media and photographers taking photos of actors and actresses attending the 81st annual Academy Awards. The fashion columnists were busy making list of the best and worst dressed during the gala.

This year’s winner for the best actress-Kate Winslet, appeared on the red carpet wearing steel blue grey asymmetrical gown from YSL and YSL shoes. It was one of the best dresses of the night. Jessica Biel looked very nice in big bow white dress from Prada. “Slumdog Millionaire” star Freida Pinto looked stunning in electric blue one shoulder long sleeve gown from John Galliano. She accessorized her outfit with unique Martin Katz ring, Choo shoes and Judith Leiber bag . Miley Cyrus was criticized for her choice of encrusted full skirted Zuhair Muhrad dress, Mary Norton bag and Neil Lane jewelry which made her look “too old and mature” for her young age. Penelope Cruz wore a vintage Balmain gown and Angelina Jolie chose strapless black dress and green drop earrings – very elegant. As usual, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and several other actresses looked very stylish wearing latest trends from the fashion runways. Also big, bold statement necklaces were very popular that evening.

When it comes to jewelry big and bold is the main theme in 2009. Green, blue and warm hues are the most fashionable this year and they go perfectly with heavily textured patterned clothing which will be a big trend for this spring.

Style experts also say that large, dramatic earrings will be a 'must-have' in 2009. Look for simple yet striking drops and for chandelier styles with colorful stones.

The Caribbean Museum of Amber

17 Feb 2009 In: Gadget

The Caribbean region has a long history or amber arts and amber trade. Dominican amber, Colombian copal and other fossil resins are found there. Very recently a new Amber World Museum has been opened on the St Thomas Island, which presents an extensive amber collection with special emphasis on Baltic amber. The museum is a very popular spot among tourist from all over the world and usually attracts a few hundred visitors a day. The museum has been designed by Jacek Baron a famous Polish jewelry designer and amber artisan. Visitors of the museum can see his amazing work like the Amber Waterfall and the Amber Forest. The Forest is built of artificial shrubs and trees and shows how amber is formed , while the Waterfall is a wall, more than 6.5 feet wide and 16 feet high, lined with Colombian copal aged in an autoclave, with water flowing over it.

The museum is divided into two sections: exhibition rooms and retail store. In the exhibition rooms visitors can see beautiful collection of various kinds of amber including Baltic, Japanese and Burmese amber, as well as copal. There is also a large collection of amber nuggets, drops and inclusions. Each exhibit is carefully described and illustrated which makes a visit a great learning experience. Founders of the museum also displayed replicas of many famous amber artifacts from the Neolithic Age, through Roman times. A reference to the Caribbean region’s history comes as three enormous, beautifully crafted ships from Columbus voyage mounted on amber waves. It is said that Columbus came here during one of his voyages and received gifts of gold and amber from the natives.

The owners of the museum plan to expand it and add new sections on regular basis. Probably in a near future a Forgery Section will be opened.

Stars like Longoria Parker, Corbin Bleu, Jordin Sparks, Ludacris, Maria Shriver, Spike Lee and Elliot Yamin showed their support for Rihanna during last Saturday NBA All-Star Game slam-dunk contest.

Rihanna has been maintaining a low profile since the assault incident but fans and friends showed their love when her song “Umbrella” was played on PA system during the break. The crowd cheered loudly when the tune came on. Chris Brown had been scheduled to perform at several of the All-Star weekend events, but canceled in the wake of his arrest following his alleged assault of Rihanna.

An NBA official told E! News of Brown's pulling out: "He's not exactly missed. He does not currently represent the image we are trying to project."
