Fall will be here in no time, and with it will come all the fun autumn fashions that feature seasonal browns, purples, mahogany.

But don’t let fall’s signature deep tones dull your wardrobe. In fact, long live the memory of summer—learn how to work your favorite sunny styles into cold weather fashion!

Got a favorite tank top? If you’re like me, you may have more than one ribbed tank or cami that you’d deem a wardrobe staple. Wear these versatile classics underneath a loose tunic that you can cinch at the waist with a big-buckled belt—one of the bold fashions popular in the cool weather months. Thick leggings or skinny jeans work great under tunics, long sweaters, and long coats. Just remember not to choose too loose of a pant when wearing tops that extend below your waist. Baggy jeans with a thick hem, pants that tend to wrinkle, and some wide leg styles can bulk up underneath the cloth of your top, creating unwanted bumps.

These types of pants would be best worn with another fall favorite. Remember the three-quarter sleeve pullovers and midriff jackets that you loved this summer? Well, even if you haven’t tried that sweetheart style, a cute fall alternative might be just right for your wardrobe: crochet sweaters. A modern take on the old grandma style hovers just above or around your waist so you can wear high-waist jeans, thick and baggy jeans, or tight and bootcut jeans. Similar to the light sweaters that you might choose in the summer, crochet sweaters are thick enough to keep out the cool, but feature short sleeves. This leaves less bulk later when you have to pile on the jackets and scarves.

Crochet sweaters come in many different styles though, so start noticing which looks you can fall for. I prefer the style that has only one large button at the top, letting the rest of the sweater hang loosely around me. Top off this or other outfits with a knit or corduroy hat.

Miss your flip flops already? Before the weather gets too cold, sandals still work with your fall fashions. Flat styles that have lots of straps are appropriate with jeans and leggings. Try those that have a jewel decoration, cute buckle, or a slight wedge to match the accents on your jackets, belts, and more.
