Do you know how to spot fake amber when shopping for amber jewelry or any other amber product? The problem is that with excellent imitations available on the market today it is very difficult to distinguish them from the originals.
Therefore the Polish amber trade (Poland is one of the biggest producers/suppliers of natural Baltic amber in the world) came up with the idea of creating European Baltic Amber standard, which would help to tidy up the amber market. Possibly the standard and consultations will be finalized this year. When it comes into force, the Center of Certification will be established in Gdansk.
Pawel Adamowicz, President of Gdansk said “We are not able to eliminate amber imitations from the market, but thanks to the standard, there will be a clear message to the consumers, what is and what isn't real amber. Labels will contain appropriate notes. In case of raw material it will be an examination protocol, type of amber, weight rank and purity rank. In case of amber products it will be the examination protocol. Although the standard is unsolicited and legally binding only for those who refer to it, it will be still a warranty of the quality of raw amber as well as products made with it.”
