South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with co-creator of Avenue Q, co-creator Robert Lopez took home the most number of awards at the Tony Awards ceremony held recently. Their super hit musical, The Book of Mormon, which has been excellently received by critics for its tongue in cheek humor and bawdiness, was the big winner of the night. The musical was expected to win anyway, and this was just the icing on the cake for the creators. The play is a satirical take on religion and Mormonism, and narrates the tale of two Mormon Missionaries who are transferred to a small village in Uganda, Africa. They innocently try to share their sermons with the locals, who are threatened by a warlord, famine, AIDS and poverty. Of course, a musical like this has come under the close scrutiny of the church, whose response has been measured and limited. There has obviously been some controversy, as there always will be when there is anything that threatens any religious or political belief system. The Tony Awards also proved to be a big hit, with popular host Neil Patrick Harris reprising his role for a second time, entertaining a crowd that contained the likes of Al Pacino, Catherine Zeta-Jones and James Earl Jones.
